With the growth of the internet, the term “personal brand” has been catching some mainstream buzz for the past few years as individuals have learned how to brand themselves and build a business around their expertise.
Check out the video below on how to get started with your personal brand:
As the Caribbean moves towards becoming a digital-first region, it’s important that professionals and entrepreneurs understand how they can build their own brand and create success on their own terms.
Now you might be wondering, “Okay Nadine, but what exactly is a personal brand?”
Glad you asked.
“PERSONAL BRANDING IS HOW YOU PRESENT YOURSELF AND SHOW UP IN THE WORLD.”
It’s how others perceive you and it includes every experience people have when they interact with you. Having a strong personal brand means you understand who you are, your strengths and unique value and present yourself that way consistently.
It means you’ve found your voice and can offer up something no one else can – you and your perspective.
Personal branding is essential in the digital age if you’re looking to get hired, promoted, or want to build your small business.
You might think that reading this blog post is the first step in your personal branding journey. Think again.
You already have a personal brand, whether you’re aware of it or not.
Don’t believe me?
Google your name followed by your hometown. If you have a Facebook page or LinkedIn profile, your name probably comes up on the first page.
Or perhaps you are listed in the phone book. Maybe you were recently mentioned in a local news article or your company website.
All of these things are part of your personal brand.
Scary much? Ahhh, you’ll be fine.
It’s already out there and you can’t do anything about it. What you CAN do though, is manage your personal brand so what people see about you is what you WANT them to see.
The key is being intentional in developing and implementing your personal brand so you can really take control of your life and arrive at your intended destination faster than others.
When I started building my sports media brand when I used to live in Toronto, Canada, to be honest, I didn’t have any real clue as to what I was doing. I was just a sports fanatic that loved her Lakers and Premier League, hopped on a camera and gave her best Jemele Hill from ESPN impression.
But once all these opportunities starting opening up for me such as being on radio, television, and online I knew I was onto something.
Once I started seriously building my personal brand, I was still in college. Most of my classmates looked at me like I was a weirdo for starting a YouTube channel and my creating my own website.
Not to be harsh but they were still stuck in the old-school mentality of believing all they needed to do was get good grades, suck up to teachers and they would get through in life.
Boy, were they wrong.
After graduation, while most of my classmates were struggling to find work and had to resort to finding employment outside of their field, I was constantly being approached for new opportunities in the sports radio and broadcasting industry.
And even when I recently moved back with my family to Trinidad and Tobago, I was able to score an awesome job as a sports presenter for Flow Sports, the number one network in the region.
All because I built a strong brand.

Building your personal brand is all about believing in yourself and what you bring to the market.
It’s sharing who you are with your clients, colleagues, and potential customers and turning that into something financially lucrative.
Here are some key questions to ask yourself before building your brand:
- Who am I? What do I stand for?
- What is my super genius quality that makes me unique?
- Who do I want to serve? Who is my dream client or employer?
- What does success look like to me?
It’s accepting that you might not be for everyone — some people may be scared or intimidated by your ability to live with authenticity and a whole heart all the time — and that’s okay. Because by embracing and sharing who you are online and off, you’ll be attracting your true tribe.
With a strong personal brand, you ultimately create and control your career and business success.
And in the Caribbean, since personal branding is still a fairly new concept, if you start now, you’ll be miles ahead of the competition.
Now do know, that personal branding does take time.
Do you want to live your life riding in the passenger seat of a car taking in the scenery and not knowing if you’ll like where you end up? Or, do you want to be the driver, where you plan your trip, map out where you’re going and how you intend to get there?
The time has come to take control of your personal brand. Define what success looks like for you, step out of your comfort zone and start to live life on your own terms.
“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”
